As the battle for the 2024 General Election begins, social media is already buzzing with campaign ads. Having stood in two General Elections and several local elections, and after more than a decade of dedicated community service in various volunteer roles, I have made a significant decision. Balancing these commitments with running my business and, most importantly, being a devoted husband and father, has always been my top priority.
After many conversations and much contemplation, I have decided not to stand as a candidate in the General Election on July 4th. While this decision brings relief to my wife, although the decision has disappointed my son.Â
I had always envisioned stepping back from standing in elections when I turned 50, and after much reflection, I believe this is the right choice for now. However, this is not a definitive farewell to politics—just a pause, as future elections are likely not far off.
Even though I won't be a candidate in this snap election, my commitment to our community remains unwavering. Long after the election is over and the candidates have disappeared, I will continue to serve and support the community through my various volunteer roles and wider projects, as elections are a one-day event, but community service is a year-round responsibility.
Although I am not standing as a candidate in this general election, I will still be playing an active role in ensuring the electorate know who is standing and what they promise to do in return for your vote and post election will hold them to those pledges and promises.
Political differences aside I have immense respect for all the candidates as individuals standing in this election. I understand the dedication, time, financial strain, and impact on family life that comes with running for office, as well as the unfortunate, often unseen, negative aspects faced by candidates.
My plea to you is simple: ensure you are registered to vote and make your voice heard on election day. Your vote is crucial in shaping our future.
Beyond elections Together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant community by working together putting people and place before party politics.
