Cumbria now the only place under consideration and consultation for GDF

The future of GDF in the UK is now sits in the hands of Cumbria

The question is until it's delivered what risk to the future of safe secure GDF “Geologically Disposal Facility” will the political micro moments have.

The former Copeland area is now the only areas were GDF working groups are underway and communities are involved in the discussions and will ultimately have the final say via a referendum on the airing of a GDF deep under the area.

During the process millions of community funding is unlocked with no obligation to say yes to GDF.

I know a fair bit about the GDF as I had spent months in discussions looking at the potential areas with NWM but unfortunately the geology of the areas considered was not suitable in a big enough concentration to progress to a working group stage and unlock the millions for local communities involved locally.

I firmly believe that as other countries are also moving forward with GDF also.

If provides the safest long term and we are taking 1000’s of years safe locked away from the surface and any risk the future may bring.

No one knows what the situation with be even a 100 years from now let alone 1000 years.

Right now the high level nuclear material is stored above ground. However that needs infrastructure and funding to maintain it safely and avoid and ecological catastrophe from happening.

If for example we saw the government collapse, war break out, social collapse, the UK break up as a country into smaller countries, rapid rise in sea levels as a few very feasible things that could happen over a 100, 500, 1000 years.

The breakdown of the secure above ground storage of the high level material would cause damage to the eco system.

Not doing GDF is simply not an option we have to clean up and safely lock away our mess and not leave it for future generations to face.

Future generations may not have the resources or skills to deal with the material in a safe way.

Failure to address the safe disposal of our high level waste will be leaving a ticking time bomb for the future to deal with on a scale that will mirror the Clare crisis caused by years of failure to address our carbon emissions.

I hope as the only area now under consideration after Lincolnshire County Council showed their ignorance and lack of factual knowledge and leadership that the Cumberland council administration can see the potential and vital need for the future in GDF and the political shift in control in the micro moments of now does not see future have to deal with our mess and an ecological nightmare.

My one single plea to Cumberland Council members is please support and ensure GDF in west Cumbria is supported and delivered to benefit communities now and protect the future generations.
